Yoga For the Traveler

Author:  Wesley Vonn

Yoga can be a great way to stay in shape, stay centered, and become more self-aware. However, you do not need to be in your regular studio or in your own home to receive these benefits. It is becoming increasingly popular for those who are traveling to use yoga for a variety of reasons.
Yoga can have many benefits on the mind while traveling. It can help you to relax and alleviate the stress of being away from home. It doesn’t matter if you are traveling for work or for enjoyment, it can take its toll. Practicing yoga just a little bit a day can keep the stress at bay and allow you to enjoy the full experience of being where you are for whatever reason.
It also can have profound impacts on the body. One of the things people dread while traveling is the aches and pains they feel in their body. Sitting in a car or on a plane for hours to get to your destination and sleeping in a bed that does not know the ins and outs of your body can cause the pain to build up. Yoga can alleviate the stress that is on the joints, and can even eliminate back and leg pain. Practicing yoga before and after long periods of sitting without being able to stretch and before and after sleeping in a bed that your body is not used to can save you a great deal of discomfort.
As more people realize how great yoga can be on the mind and body while traveling, more yoga stations are being set up. Many hotels are adding rooms for their guests to practice their yoga with more space than in their hotel room. Even airports are adding Zen areas for people who are in the midst of traveling to get some relief from their yoga and meditation. While you can do it by yourself in your room or wherever you happen to be, these rooms are often set up to be relaxing and spacious for you to get the greatest benefit.
As The Yoga Journal illustrates, there are many ways to incorporate these benefits of yoga into your traveling plans, whether you are staying at a lavish hotel in Las Vegas or a more affordable hotel somewhere less extravagant. It is important to do some research into what hotels in your price range offer what amenities. Many hotels have complimentary yoga classes and great fitness studios to take advantage of. On my last trip to Las Vegas I looked at a  hotel reviews site to compare all the hotels in Las Vegas in order to find out which hotel fit my price range and personality.  It is important to be mindful of what your body and mind are telling yourself while you are traveling. You may be too busy to notice that you are homesick or are craving the routine of being home, but when you take the time to listen to your body, it will thank you.
